What You Should Know About Home Security
June 4th, 2009
With the economic woes the country is facing, times are tough for many people. Unfortunately, in uncertain times, crime tends to rise. Most people tighten their belts and cut costs, but others try to maintain their lifestyle through illegal means. Break, enter and theft is an attractive prospect for criminals who want fast, easy money without having to work for it. This is why you need to have the best home security system that you can manage.
You might believe that installing a high, solid wall around your home will do the trick. However, this is certainly not the best means of protecting your home and property. Strange though it may seem, a highly private property is actually easier to rob once the burglars make it inside the fence, because no one can see them. If you’re counting on a fence to protect your property, you’re better off erecting tall palisade style fencing so that an intruder can be noticed by your neighbors if he is on your property.
Tinted windows are another important deterrent to intruders that will help to keep your home safe. Even if your blinds or drapes are open all day long, someone outside will not be able to see into your house. Thieves are less likely to break in if they can’t see anything of value to steal and if they’re not sure if anyone is home or not. If you’re replacing the glass, be sure also to choose a strengthened product that can resist breakage.
Most people have made a habit of locking their doors each time they leave the house. But an area of concern is with your children, who must be taught to do the same. They should keep the doors locked when they are home alone or playing outside. Make sure you always lock the gates that provide access to your property.
You might want to consider getting a dog to help protect your property. If you do, get one that’s suspicious of strangers. Robbers are easily discouraged by the presence of a dog, especially if it’s front and center.
If you have the money to spend on installing a home security system, your best bet is to get one that’s monitored. You’ll need to sign a contract with a monitoring company that will handle the situation if the alarm is set off. But the cost will be well worth it in terms of peace of mind and not having to pay to replace all your possessions. Even a local alarm can scare off burglars who are looking for the easiest way to get what they want.
